Marcus Aurelius是一个伟大的罗马皇帝。我初识他是在电影《Gladiator 1》里，那时他很惨，遭自己儿子Commodus杀了，只因Marcus要传贤不传亲（这很奇怪）。不过在纪录片《Roman Empire》里，Marcus的行为就很正常了，他把王位传给了Commodus，但是Marcus的妻子Faustina为了自身安全搞了一出换老公的把戏，然后为了赎罪跑到Marcus所在的前线忏悔后服毒自杀（这很奇怪）。
Marcus除了是一位皇帝，他也是一个哲学家，他的大作《Meditation》至今都被世人阅读。我很惊叹，一个A.D. 180的作品，竟然在将近1900年后的今天还能被阅读，这就是人类文明的魅力吧。在我看的这个版本里，某作家写了一个序，其中在提到Faustina的时候仅仅说了她死在了行军途中，并没有纪录片里这么狗血的剧情，这又让我不得不叹服，历史果然是一个任人打扮的小姑娘。
Philosophy
For Marcus and his contemporaries, the situation was very different. Ancient philosophy certainly had its academic side. Athens and other large cities had publicly financed chairs of philosophy, and professional philosophers taught, argued and wrote, as they do today. But philosophy also had a more practical dimension. It was not merely a subject to write or argue about, but one that was expected to provide a “design for living”—a set of rules to live one’s life by. This was a need not met by ancient religion, which privileged ritual over doctrine and provided little in the way of moral and ethical guidelines. Nor did anyone expect it to. That was what philosophy was for.
今天我们提到哲学，大抵只会想到哲学学位，哲学学科，大学里面的文科，或许高深，还有点讳莫如深的感觉。但我和涂涂对哲学有过一些讨论。涂涂从博士学位的名字出发，为什么博士叫Ph.D，其全称为Doctor of Philosophy，哲学博士，无论你的学科是什么，统统叫哲学博士，说明哲学很牛皮。而我则是在教人打网球的时候，总是不经意间告诉我的学员，做这个动作，这个行为，你要理解背后的哲学，我总是告诉他们，你要做我教你的动作，哪怕前面有个网，你必须坚定的做这个动作，而不是你知道前面有个网，你要越过这个网所以改变我的动作，你只能做这个动作，然后碰到网，被网停止下来，这就是背后的哲学。我口中的这个哲学，就和这本书里面提到的非学科性哲学非常的相似了，进行一下简单的修改，即a rule to swing one's racket.
哲学当然不仅仅是打网球的挥拍，更重要的是这句话“Design for living”中的Design，设计。设计是一个非常重要，非常关键的概念，人和人非常关键的差距就在于设计。Ramit的致富攻略中的第一步就是Design your rich life；而我所在的国际工程行业，老国际们就说，国内的工程承包商们之所以在高端市场进不去，最大的问题就在于设计，很多EPC的设计都是包给西班牙人在做，中国的设计院没这个能力。而哲学可以用来设计生活，这么一看一定要学好哲学，设计幸福人生，过上美好人生。
